The Monte Cristo
Ingredients:
- 12 slices Aunt Millie's Homestyle Whole Grain Honey White Bread
- 8 thin slices of Gouda Cheese
- 4 slices of smoked turkey breast
- 4 slices of lean honey baked ham
- 4 Tbsp. vegetable oil
- Garnish with powdered sugar and blackberry preserves
Batter
- 1 large egg
- 1 Tbsp. baking powder
- 1/2 cup skim milk
- 1/2 cup water
- 3/4 cup whole wheat flour
- Pinch of salt
Yield: 4 Sandwiches
Directions:
- Remove crust from bread slices.
- Top 8 bread slices with one slice of Gouda cheese.
- Cut turkey and ham slices in half, placing one piece of turkey and one piece of ham on top of the 8 slices of bread with Gouda cheese.
- Place one plain slice of bread in between two slices of bread with toppings to create four triple-decker sandwiches.
- Tightly wrap the sandwiches in plastic wrap, pressing down on the outer edges so that sandwiches are sealed shut. Place sandwiches in refrigerator.
- In a medium mixing bowl, beat together egg, milk, and water. Add baking powder, flour, and salt and beat until smooth.
- Pour vegetable oil into skillet over medium-high heat. Once oil is heated, remove one sandwich from plastic wrap, dip into batter until evenly coated and place into heated skillet.
- Cook sandwich for approximately 1 1/2 - 2 minutes per side until golden and crispy. Remove sandwich from heat and immediately sprinkle with confectioner's sugar. Cut sandwich into quarters.
- Repeat steps 7 and 8 for remaining 3 sandwiches.
- Serve warm with blackberry preserves & fresh fruit. Great for lunch or as an appetizer. Enjoy!
