Fried Italian Grilled Cheese Sandwich
Ingredients:
- 8 slices Aunt Millie's Homestyle Buttermilk Bread
- 8 think slices smoked mozzarella cheese
- 1/2 c. basil leaves
- 4 Tbsp. vegetable oil
Batter:
- 1 large eggs
- 1 Tbsp. baking powder
- 1/2 c. skim milk
- 1/2 c. water
- 3/4 c. whole wheat flour
- pinch of salt
Dipping Sauces:
- Spaghetti Sauce
- Pizza Sauce
- Pesto
Yield: 4 Sandwiches
Directions:
- Top 4 bread slices with one slice of mozzarella.
- Top with a few basil leaves.
- Top with another slice of mozzarella.
- Top with remaining bread slice.
- In a medium mixing bowl, beat together egg, milk, and water. Add baking powder, flour, and salt and beat until smooth.
- Pour vegetable oil into skillet over medium-high heat. Once oil is heated, dip one sandwich into batter until evenly coated and place into heated skillet.
- Cook sandwich for approzimately 1 1/2 - 2 minutes per side until golden and crispy. Remove sandwich from heat and let set for a few minutes.
- Serve warm with your choice of dipping sauce.
